When the clocks change, and what it does to your light

The clocks go back one hour in late October, and the first thing most people notice is that it gets dark on the way home. In 2026 the change lands on Sunday 25 October in the UK and across the EU, and a week later, on Sunday 1 November, in most of the United States. The change moves less than it seems, and it is the evenings it takes the light from, not the mornings.

When do the clocks change in 2026?

The autumn change is the end of summer time, and it always falls on a Sunday.

  • In the UK and across the EU, it is Sunday 25 October 2026. The UK clocks go back at 2:00am, when the time becomes 1:00am and the country returns to Greenwich Mean Time. The EU change happens at the same instant everywhere, 1:00am GMT, rather than at 2:00am in each separate zone.
  • In the United States, it is Sunday 1 November 2026. Daylight saving time ends at 2:00am local time, when the clocks fall back to 1:00am. Arizona and Hawaii are the two states that stay put.

Both changes move the clock back by one hour. The simple way to keep the direction straight is spring forward, fall back.

Back or forward, and what it does to your light

Putting the clock back one hour does not change where the sun is. It changes what the clock says when the sun gets there. The same sunrise and the same sunset now read an hour earlier.

So the morning after the change, the sun comes up about an hour earlier by the clock, and your mornings are lighter. The trade is that the sun also sets an hour earlier, so the evenings go dark sooner. The length of the day is the same as it was the day before. The clock change just moves that daylight from the evening to the morning.

That is the whole effect, and it is worth being clear about, because the clock change gets blamed for a lot it does not do.

The clock change does not make the days shorter

It is easy to feel like the clocks going back is what tips you into winter. It isn't. The days had already been getting shorter, by a couple of minutes each day, all through autumn. That is the Earth's tilt, not the clock.

What the change does is move the darkness to a time you notice it more. Losing the light at 5pm on the way out of work registers far more than gaining it at 7am when you are still indoors. The total daylight for the day did not drop. Its timing did.

Why your mornings keep getting darker anyway

The hour of morning light you get back on 25 October is only a loan. The days keep shortening until the winter solstice in late December, so within a few weeks the mornings have quietly handed that hour back and are drawing in again.

This is why planning around a single sunrise time stops working in autumn. A sunrise in the first week of November is roughly 45 minutes later by the end of the month in much of the UK, and it keeps slipping into the new year. If you run before work, or walk the dog, or drop kids at school in the dark, the useful thing is not the date of the clock change. It is knowing what today's sunrise and sunset actually are, and watching them move. The same habit pays off with the forecast, which is why a figure like a 40 percent chance of rain is worth reading properly rather than rounding to a yes or a no.

Where Ora Weather fits

You do not have to do any of the resetting yourself. Your phone picks up the new time on its own, and the sunrise and sunset times in Ora Weather move with it, so what you see each morning is the real one for that day and that place, not last week's.

That is the quiet value of it through the dark half of the year. The clock change is a single Sunday. The light keeps moving every day after it, and the honest thing a weather app can do is show you where it has got to.

Common questions

When do the clocks change in 2026?
In the UK and across the EU the clocks go back one hour at the end of summer time on Sunday 25 October 2026. In most of the United States, daylight saving time ends a week later, on Sunday 1 November 2026. Each change sets the clock back one hour.
Do the clocks go back or forward in October?
Back. In autumn the clocks go back one hour, which is the end of summer time. In spring they go forward one hour. A common way to remember it is spring forward, fall back.
What time exactly do the clocks go back?
In the UK the clocks go back at 2:00am, when the time becomes 1:00am. The EU change happens at the same instant everywhere, 1:00am Greenwich Mean Time. In the United States, at 2:00am local time the clocks fall back to 1:00am.
Does the clock change give me more daylight?
No. The amount of daylight on any given day is set by the season, not the clock. Putting the clock back one hour moves daylight from the evening to the morning. It does not create any.
Why do mornings still get darker through the winter even after the clocks go back?
Because the days keep getting shorter until the winter solstice in late December. The clock change gives mornings a one-off hour of light, and then the shortening days steadily take it back.
